Identity

This one didn't turn out as well as I had hoped. One of those times I wish I was a better artist.

I was just very disturbed by this story about a woman whose family had her hair cut and put her in a suit for an open-casket funeral, to the surprise of her friends and coworkers who had known her as a woman for the past several years: http://gawker.com/transgender-womans-family-presents-her-as-a-man-at-ope...

I understand this was a terrible loss for her family, and that in a way it doesn't matter what happens after we die. Funerals are for the living. But... it's clear that her family never accepted who she was, what she apparently felt was her authentic self. And I find that just incredibly, incredibly sad.

For a really good book about this topic, I suggest: She's Not There: A Life in Two Genders. It's actually just a compelling book all on its own, whether you are interested in learning about transgender issues or not.
